Thiago Duarte

Thiago Duarte is a bassist from southern Brazil. Active in the local scene, he has played with names such as Joao Donato, Egberto Gismonti, Joao Bosco, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. With Flora and Airto, he participated as an electric and acoustic bassist in the latest released albuns, including "If You Will", by Flora Purim, nominated for the Grammy 2022 in the best Latin jazz album category.

Self-taught on acoustic bass, he moved to Berlin in 2020 to pursue a master's degree in jazz and take formal instrument lessons at the Berlin University of Arts. Since then he has played at festivals and jazz venues in Copenhagen, Berlin and Austria, and divides his time between Europe and South America.

Recorded on dozens of albums by local artists within jazz and Brazilian popular music, and performed at festivals and venues in Asia, Europe, South America and North America, including South by Southwest Music Festival, Fête de La musique, Copenhagen Jazz Festival and INNtöne Jazzfestival. In January 2023 he participated as a double bass player in the upcoming album by Egberto Gismonti and Orquestra a base de sobre de Curitiba.

As a music improvisation researcher, he recently published an article in IASPM Journal of Music on musical interaction through polyrhythmic elements, part of his master's thesis in music education. He taught electric bass in an extension course at the Federal University of Paraná and at the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music, in Chennai, South India
